MP Claire says Alec is a first class role model on and off the pitch

24 June 2005

Watford MP and keen Hornets supporter Claire Ward has added her support to Alec Chamberlain's Testimonial season.

Claire is a Vicarage Road season ticket holder and gets to as many Watford games as she can, and says she has nothing but respect for Alec as a player, and for what he has done for the club as a whole since he arrived in 1996.

She said: "As a keen fan and season ticket holder at Vicarage Road, it is my great pleasure to add my congratulations to Alec Chamberlain as he celebrates his testimonial year.

"Alec has been at the heart of Watford FC through the good times and the not so good. During those years, he has displayed not just immense skill as a goal keeper, but the qualities that has made him well respected at Watford FC and beyond.

"Alec is a keen supporter of community activities and I have witnessed first hand his work in this area when not between the sticks for Watford. I know that the many school children he has met over those years will continue to aspire to be just like him.

"I wish him well in this year and hope that he enjoys every moment of his well deserved testimonial."

And Brian Binley, Alec's local MP, has added his support to his constituent's Testimonial season.

"If football had more players and ambassadors like Alec Chamberlain, then the game would be much the better for it," said Brian. "As a fan of the game, I have nothing but respect for Alec - not just that he's still going strong into his 40s, but his conduct on and off the pitch. Watford supporters have every reason to be proud of him.

"As a supporter of Northampton Town, I still remember Alec's outstanding performance in a match at Sixfields back in 1997 - the season they won the Second Division championship. The highlight of that game for me was a fantastic save he made in the first half - easily one of the best we've ever seen at Sixfields. It came as no surprise to me that at the end of that season that he was included in the PFA's Second Division team of the season.

"I wish Alec every success with his Testimonial season."

Congratulations on your testimonial year, Alec. It is very well deserved, if just for putting up with ten years of my heckling!
