Rock legend and former Watford chairman Sir Elton John has donated one of his concert outfits for goalkeeper Alec Chamberlain to auction at his Gala Testimonial Dinner next month.
The suit - which has been signed by Sir Elton - is the star attraction among a number of top quality items that has been donated to Alec, including a framed Chelsea shirt signed by all their players.
"It's a fantastic gesture by Sir Elton, who’s been incredibly supportive throughout the year," said Alec. "I'm not sure which concert he wore it at, but it was one he wore while he was touring last year."
Alas, with Alec - at 6'2" - being much taller than Sir Elton, who stands 5'5" in his bare feet, he called on Testimonial Committee member Peter Jones to model the suit for a promotional photograph.
Said Peter, a BBC journalist and PR consultant who has been helping Alec promote his various Testimonial events this season: "The things I'll do for Alec!
"But it's not every day that you get to wear a suit once worn on stage by one of the world's most famous entertainers. I'm a little taller than Sir Elton myself, so it was a little short in the arms and legs, but it wasn't far off a decent fit - but it's fair to say it is not the kind of outfit I'd wear on a night out!
“Most importantly though, we had a terrific laugh while we were posing for the photographs – and I’ve told Alec I will not be modelling it on the night!"
The Gala Testimonial Dinner takes place at the Watford Hilton on Saturday, February 25, and promises to be a fantastic night, with former Watford manager Graham Taylor already confirmed as a guest speaker.
It is the third big event of Alec's testimonial year, following his game against Charlton back in July, and the highly successful Race Night in November.
"It's going well," said Alec. "People have been very supportive, and tickets are going well for the dinner, and i think once people realise what a fantastic night we're going to have we'll get a good turn out.
"I really appreciate all the support, from fans, the club, and my testimonial committee, who have all done a fantastic job for me over the last nine months."
